Modal Inference

چکیده
Evidence is presented that properties of objects, or events, or man-made artifacts in the natural world are clustered in a multidimensional space. Hence observations made by different sense modalities can be highly correlated. Such clustering favors perceptual inference, increasing its robustness, as well as supporting generalizations.

A Deep Inference System for the Modal Logic S5
We present a cut-admissible system for the modal logic S5 in a framework that makes explicit and intensive use of deep inference. Deep inference is induced by the methods applied so far in conceptually pure systems for this logic. Thus, the formulation of a system in such a framework is an evolutional process and leads to positive proof theoretical results. The system enjoys systematicity and m...
متن کاملPurity through Unravelling
We divide attempts to give the structural proof theory of modal logics into two kinds, those pure formulationswhose inference rules characterise modality completely by means of manipulations of boxes and diamonds, and those labelled formulations that leverage the use of labels in giving inference rules. The widespread adoption of labelled formulations is driven by their ability to model feature...
متن کاملDescription of Modal Logics Inheriting Admissible Rules for K4
We give a necessary and sufficient condition for any modal logic with fmp to inherit all inference rules admissible in S4. Using this condition we describe all tabular modal logics inheriting inference rules admissible for S4.
متن کاملFocused Labeled Proof Systems for Modal Logic
Focused proofs are sequent calculus proofs that group inference rules into alternating negative and positive phases. These phases can then be used to define macro-level inference rules from Gentzen’s original and tiny introduction and structural rules. We show here that the inference rules of labeled proof systems for modal logics can similarly be described as pairs of such negative and positiv...
متن کاملNonmonotonic Modes of Inference
In this paper we investigate nonmonotonic ‘modes of inference’. Our approach uses modal (conditional) logic to establish a uniform framework in which to study nonmonotonic consequence. We consider a particular mode of inference which employs a majority-based account of default reasoning—one which differs from the more familiar preferential accounts—and show how modal logic supplies a framework ...
متن کاملA Note on Globally Admissible Inference Rules for Modal and Superintuitionistic Logics
In this shot note we consider globally admissible inference rules. A rule r is globally admissible in a logic L if r is admissible in all logics with the finite model property which extend L. Here we prove a reduction theorem: we show that, for any modal logic L extending K4, a rule r is globally admissible in L iff r is admissible in all tabular logics extending L. The similar result holds for...
